Any person wears a hat but a character wears a hat on purpose.

A character has to have a memorable look. They either want to look tall, wide, colorful, pointy, distinguished, silly, or dangerous on physical impression. On the mental display, they want to look strong, mean, free and so on. And to achieve this through display, the most eye-catchy way to express that is through hats.

Here are some of the most iconic hats worn by the iconic movie characters.

The godfather - Homburg

Here is how the young Al Pacino played as Michael Corleone who is wearing a Homburg hat. Yet somehow, this hat is still The Godfather hat. As through the growing of Michael Corleone in the movie, he tried to differentiating himself from his subordinates in the family and his competitors by donning this wide-brimmed hat. Differing from the fedora in details so slight that some might shrug them off, this Homburg is definitely a statement about the one who wears them. Though adhering to the fashions of the time, this hat gives the attention of the viewers to look straight in the eye of young Michael Corleone, the upcoming big Boss.

This hat first shown on the screen when Michael Corleone interrogates his brother-in-law, Carlo, about his allegiance to the family. This scene follows a series of pivotal murders, in which Michael Corleone make the final choice of becoming the Godfather. He chooses the life, he has chosen to exercise his power, and he is choosing his crown: the Homburg.

Indiana Jones - Fedora

Indiana Jones is the alpha and omega. The idea behind his iconic fedora was that the hat is the key element of this character that he would never be without it. The fedora was made in a time when it was indecent for a men to be outside without covering his head. So no matter the action, the hat was gled onto the head of, say, a Humphery Bogart.

The imprint of this hat on cinema is indelible and incalculable. The people every time trying to pull off a brown felt fedora is like making themselves look like Harrison Ford. There is even an Indiana Jones wiki entry that trace history as seen by the hat.

Titanic - The Big Purple Hat

Titanic, as one of the most famous film in the history has truly imbed it’s foot print as cultural touchstones.

In the movie scene at eye-level, among the crowd of poor people, emerges a dainty, feminine, white-gloved hand from a white car. There were no white cars in 1912, so someone paid a good money to make it that way. A valet takes the hands, and guides it out of the seat and onto to dock. From all of these details, her hat, a Thatched in royal purple stands out as viewers memory point. On top of the decorative bow the size of a yellow fin tuna. The brim bends around the camera to reveal her: Rose (played by Kate Winslet ). In 3 hours time, when you’re crying and listening to Celine Dion singing the my heart will go on, you’ll have fallen in love with Rose .And it all started with a hat. The hat didn’t act alone, but memory of that hat sticks in our memory.
